Risby Round-Up by Robbo August 2025

Folly Lake

Plenty of quality skimmers being caught all over. Best baits are expanders, corn 6mm cubes of meat or paste. Best tip for the skimmers is to fish the pole on 2 separate lines, one at top kit plus 4, (approx 8m), and another at 13 or 14m, (obviously this will also work on the waggler). Plumb up accurately and add an inch, (maybe more than an inch if there’s lots of undertow), then feed “little and often” with dampened down micros.
It’s important to keep the feed going in regularly, hopefully the skimmers, (& odd carp), will soon oblige.
Carp sport has been fantastic with lots of fish being caught on all methods.
Recent reports I’ve had have included a few specimens over 18lbs, plus one local match angler recently had a 6 hour session and using his clicker, had an estimated 230lbs!!
Anglers using “carp style” tactics have also reported excellent sport with 15 fish per session.
Please remember bread is NOT allowed on The Folly… also NO surface baits permitted.

Tench Pond

The Tench Pond is genuinely in top form at present. Whether you are targeting the skimmers or the carp, you are all but guaranteed some fantastic sport.
Quality skimmers over 3lbs are coming out from all over, with lots of smaller ones between 4oz to 2.5lbs making up bags well in excess of 60lbs.
Best tactics are exactly the same as the Folly.
There’s been stacks of carp caught this week.
Several night anglers have told me that they’ve had to reel in their rods at night in order to get some sleep.
Best tactics have been to use small PVA bags with some micros, 4mm pellets and a few crushed boilies in them.
Lots of fish are being caught on Scopex boilies along with Tuna flavoured boilies being a good alternative.
Pole Anglers fishing paste over micros have had huge bags of carp and skimmers, best pegs are 9 – 12 or 16 – 20. Choosing the correct elastic has been difficult, as you need something soft enough for the skimmers but robust enough to tame the carp. I’d recommend the Grey Liquiflow by Elasto, which is rated 10-14 & is fantastic for skimmers. If you are catching a lot of carp and a few skimmers, the black Liquiflow, rated 12 – 16 is simply the best thing since sliced bread !!

Carp Pond

The Carp Pond is still Risby’s best kept secret. For those who don’t use the Risby Facebook site, it’s well worth a look with regular videos and photos of what’s going on around the fishery. Recent reels and photos have been taken on The Carp Pond and have shown some of the excellent sport available to those prepared to give it a go.
There’s literally thousands and thousands of roach and rudd in every peg. It’s an ideal Pond for parents with youngsters wanting to catch plenty of fish. Tactics are simple, float fished maggots, set 2 feet deep. 2 maggots on a size 16 hook is ideal, feed little and often… its as easy as it gets.
Needless to say, there’s also plenty of carp feeding too.
The margins are the best areas to fish. Corn, pellet, meat or paste will all work.
Please ensure ALL litter is picked up and either put in the bins or taken home with you.
Many thanks, enjoy your fishing!!

10th September 2017 – Folly Lake produced another storming match result today – Pully pulled off a runaway victory with 233lb from peg 14 on caster over maggot and set a new lake record while M Wood banked a respectable 138lb from peg 28 and Trev McGlocklin 112lb from peg 20. Midweek evening pleasure catches have been topping the 100lb mark so there’s no surprise the record went this week as fish go on a feeding frenzy.
