2026 Spring Risby Round-Up
Folly Lake
Recent catches have already seen some of the bigger male fish developing tubercles. This is a great sign for the future stocks and extra care should be taken when handling fish.
Best baits are 4mm or 6mm expanders, corn and double red maggot.
Biggest catches will probably be caught when using groundbait & / or micros.
The “stockies” that went in in Nov’25 have started to feed well. They can be caught all over the lake, but they seem to be in bigger numbers around pegs 1 – 7 and 40 – 35.
Carp sport continues to be very good with lots of fish in the 6 – 8lbs bracket possible. There’s also plenty of doubles being caught, especially in the Risby Open Matches, (which finish at the end of April).
Recent match weights have regularly been over 70lbs and will no doubt exceed 100lbs in the warmer weather.
The best tactics are to use the method, (no bigger than 25g, preferably, 15-20g is favoured). Method mixes are down to personal choice, but best results have been on a 50 / 50 mix of groundbait and micros, with a pink or yellow, 6mm wafter as hookbait.
Pleasure anglers using “carp style” tactics have caught plenty of quality fish per session.
10mm boilies or wafters are producing plenty of bites at the moment, but it won’t be long before 12mm or 15mm will catch some of the bigger resident carp.
Please remembe, BREAD is NOT allowed on The Folly Lake, (either on the surface or sunken)..
Also, NO surface baits are permitted.
Tench Pond
Whether you are targeting the skimmers, roach, perch or the carp, you are practically guaranteed a few bites from any peg.
Quality skimmers well over 3lbs are possible. There’s also lots of smaller ones between 4oz to 2.5lbs. Best baits are similar to the Folly, with maggots or expanders working really well. Pole Anglers that like to fish paste will soon be bagging up on big skimmers and carp.
Carp are feeding well, with the method producing some great sport, (same tactics as on the Folly).
‘Carp Anglers’ are returning in numbers, with quite a few very successful night sessions already being reported.
The margins continue to be the best areas to catch carp, especially after 4pm to dusk.
Carp Pond
If “peace & quiet” is important to you, then try the fantastic sport on The Carp Pond.
There are 25 pegs, full of fish. Species are similar to the Folly and theTench ponds with lots of carp, roach, rudd and skimmers.
For the roach and rudd, tactics are really simple. Fish the waggler with maggots, set 2 – 3 feet deep. Single or double maggot on a size 16 or 18 hook, with only a tiny dropper to get the bait down is ideal. Just feed 8 – 10 maggots every now & again and the thousands of roach and rudd will oblige all day long… its as easy as it gets!
For those wanting to catch carp, the margins are generally quite deep and the best areas to fish.
Corn, pellets or maggots will all work.
Carp anglers using 10mm, 12mm and even 15mm boilies often catch carp well into double figures, but most tend to be 7 – 9lbs.
If you are planning a trip to Risby in the near future, I hope the above helps.
If you have any queries, feel free to text me on 07834 275278 and I’ll do my best to reply as quickly as possible.

Folly Lake
Tench Pond
The match held on 10th December resulted in an average weight of 30lbs per man, the winning weight being 57lbs!
Whether you are targeting the skimmers, roach, perch or the carp, you are practically guaranteed a few bites from any peg on the pond.
Quality skimmers over 3lbs are still possible, with lots of smaller ones between 4oz to 2.5lbs. Best baits are similar to the Folly, with maggots or expanders working really well.
Carp are also continuing to feed well, with the method producing some great sport, (same tactics as on the Folly).
Pole Anglers fishing expanders or maggots over micros have had bags of skimners, roach and carp.., but again, its important to stress the need for scaling your tackle down accordingly.
Choosing the correct elastic is essential, as you still need something soft enough for the skimmers but strong enough to successfully play the carp.
Check out The Elasto range, which covers every eventuality.
Carp Pond
For those of us that are happy just to get a few bites in the depths of winter, The Carp Pond is the place to head for.
There’s literally thousands and thousands of roach and rudd in every peg.
If we get any milder days over the festive period, It’s an ideal pond for parents to take their children and have a go catching a few fish. Tactics are really simple.., float fished maggots, set 3 – 4 feet deep. Single or double maggot on a size 18 hook, with only a tiny dropper to get the bait down is ideal. Just feed 6 – 8 maggots every now & again… its as easy as it gets.
For those wanting to catch something a little more substantial, there’s also plenty of carp feeding too.
Despite the colder weather, the margins are deep on The Carp Pond and are still the best areas to fish. Corn, pellets or maggots will all work.
If you are planning a trip to Risby in the near future, I hope the above helps.
If you have any queries, feel free to text me on 07834 275278 and I’ll do my best to reply as quickly as possible.
Finally, all the best for Xmas and a happy new year.
Many thanks, enjoy your fishing!!
