Risby Open Match 16th March 2024

Risby Open on Folly

Saturday 16th March 2024

A hard  overnight frost slowed the carp sport down a bit, with only odd ones being caught. Thankfully, the stockies fed quite well, and most lads had between 4 and 8 of them mixed in with their silvers.

John ElGreco even managed to catch a rare tench. There were also some large perch and odd ide caught, plus lots of skimmersranging from a few ounces to 3lbs.

Match Result

Rich Willey won off peg 23 with 53lbs 7oz. Rich had a couple of big carp shallow and 4 towards the dam wall for a level 44lbs plus 9lbs 7oz of mixed silvers.

Jason Moody took 2nd with a total weight of 32lbs 7oz off peg 18.

‘Jas’ had a lovely net of skimmers and other silvers for 27lbs 5oz, which won the silvers match.

In 3rd was Robbo with 27lbs 15oz off peg 25.

Risby Open Match 2nd March 2024

Risby Open Match 2nd March 2024

Saturday 2nd March 2024.

The weather was reasonable for the latest open match, albeit it was still a tad nippy.

The match was being run as a rover over the Tench and Carp Ponds.

There were 12 hardy souls that turned out, and at the draw, there was the usual jovial banter between the lads.

Neil “Cockney” White was blessed by the draw-bag gods and pulled out 1st pick… after what seemed an eternity in deciding where to go, he eventually plumped for peg 28 on The Tench Pond.

This peg has shown some recent form and was always likely to be chosen early on at the draw.

Willy Eyre also had an early draw and opted to fish peg 12 on Tench.

Willy started on the hybrid method casting tight to the bank between pegs 13 and 14 on the dam wall.

He was soon into a nice carp of approx 7lbs, followed shortly by another one of a similar size.

Back on the flyer, (peg 28), Cockney had started on the long pole towards the tree in peg 27. He opted to use maggots on the hook and was rewarded with some Carp ranging from 4lbs to 8lbs.

Whilst Willy caught odd fish throughout the match he only ended up with 7 carp and 2 decent skimmers which totalled 55lbs.

Cockney’s peg was much more consistent with carp being caught on the long pole and method feeder. Cockney landed 15 carp, (& lost 7), plus a few silvers for his cracking winning weight of 86lbs.

The silvers match was dominated by Steve “Pully” Pulford. Pully was actually the last pick at the draw and had chosen peg 21on the Carp Pond. Pully started the match hoping the carp would feed, but it became apparent early on that it wasn’t going to happen, so he quickly decided to target the roach and skimmers.

Pully amassed a superb net of silvers totalling 31lbs 4oz, (he also had 2 baby carp that totalled 4oz!)

Result…

1st Cockney, 86lbs.

2nd Willy Eyre, 55lbs.

3rd Jon ElGreco, 31:10, peg 1 Carp.

4th Pully, 31:09.

Silvers

1st Pully, 31:05

2nd Dave Sharp, 22:08, peg 16 Carp.

3rd Robbo, 15:10, peg 9 Tench.

Risby Open Match 17th Feb 2024

Saturday’s match result from the Risby Open on TENCH and CARP Ponds…
17th February 2024.

A much warmer and thankfully drier day greeted the lads for this week’s open match.
At the draw, the majority of the lads opted to fish on the Tench Pond, with only a handful trecking down to the Carp Pond.
Willy Eyre decided he’d seen enough activity in the shallow end of the Tench Pond to give it a go.
Willy chose peg 28 and set up the method and long pole.
The carp duly obliged and after the first hour or so, he’d put 4 decent fish in his net.
Mr X was on peg 31 and decided he’d other things at home that needed sorting and packed up at midday, leaving the entire shallow bay at Willy’s mercy.
Willy caught steady throughout the match and ended with 12 carp and a few silvers for 75lbs.
Joss Gilligan made the most of his early draw and chose peg 16 on Tench.
Joss set off trying to catch carp long at 15 – 16m on corn and had a few carp but it wasn’t as solid as he’d hoped.
He therefore fished with soft pellet over micros straight out in front of him a d found a large shoal of decent skimmers.
At the scaleshe had approx 6 carp for 32:10 & a lovely bag of skimbobs totalling 32:14.
Result…
1st Willy 75lbs, p.28 Tench.
2nd Joss, 65lbs, peg 16 Tench.

4th Pully, 48lbs peg 21 Carp.

Risby Open Match 27th Jan 20224

Risby Open Match 27th Jan 20224

Open Match on Tench & Carp Ponds.
This week’s open saw milder, but windy conditions which made things tough for the majority of the lads fishing the pole.
Thankfully for Robbo, who was on peg 12 on Tench Pond, the wind wasn’t too much of a problem as he’d decided to fish the waggler tight to the dam wall.
Robbo started with corn on the hook, fished at full depth and was rewarded with an early mirror carp of approx 6lbs.
This was followed by 3 more decent carp in the next hour or so, but things slowed up after that.
A non productive hour on the pole forced Robbo back on the waggler and despite losing 3 more foul-hooked fish, he added 4 more carp together with 4 roach for his winning total 55lbs 7oz.
Harry Bignal took 2nd with 48lbs 1oz from peg 31 on Tench. Harry had a few decent carp on the tip and a couple on the pole at 16m.
Result…
1st Robbo, 55:07, peg 12 on Tench.
2nd Harry Bignall, 48:01, peg 31 on Tench.
3rd Pully 21:02, peg 25 on Carp.
4th Willy Eyre, 16:07, peg 3 on Carp.

Silvers Match,
1st Willy Eyre, 16:02 of roach.
2nd Matt Waites, 10:05, peg 23 Carp.
